There’s no doubt that small businesses are the foundation of the British economy, and with over 9,000 new businesses started this year alone, being an entrepreneur has never been so popular. However, it does seem that its mainly men taking the start-up plunge, with women currently owning less than one in five SMEs in the UK.

This is not something that sits comfortably with Neeta Patel, CEO of the New Entrepreneurs Foundation - a not-for-profit organisation which helps aspiring entrepreneurs get started, via a unique 12-month programme of hands-on work placement, mentoring, and networking – who is herself an entrepreneur.

This weekend there was a lot of smoke around the garden, we even had to warn the neighbours as we had to bomb my beloved home office shed. But don’t panic it is still standing and I am typing this week’s blog post from the comfort of my 4 painted blue shed walls.

By bombing I mean flea bomb, but wow there was a lot of smoke! Yep office assistant number 1 and star of a number of iHubbub facebook posts LC had fleas, thankfully she doesn’t any more. So we are all a lot less itchy.

Okay, okay, this isn’t the same kinda lady that we shared our honeymoon with.

This one also has four legs but is decidedly larger. Not to say my groom prefers larger ladies, but her big black eyes simply just melted his kind and caring heart and now he has to go down to the farm each day to feed her.

It all started earlier in the year when we were off to our local pub after a long day of toiling in our home office. We passed this field with this very lonely looking horse and Ken said that next time we’d throw her a carrot.

Which we did.

Seriously I have had enough…

True, I spend more time on Facebook than the most rational of home business owners, after all it's part of my job for iHubbub to be monitoring and posting social media marketing content, but this past week has been a bit strange.

New husband, Ken Sheridan, stole all the female hearts at his own wedding when he sang a surprise ballad to his new wife, bestselling author Paula Wynne.

The home based business entrepreneurs Ken Sheridan and Paula Wynne (now Sheridan), wed a couple of weeks ago and the groom shocked his new bride when he got up and sang her the lovely ballad ‘This guy’s in love with you’ by Herb Alpert.

steve jobs home business garageHome business news this week is that Steve Jobs's old garage where he started building Apple computers with his friend Steve Wozniak, may become a historical building.

The Los Altos Historical Commission is assessing the garage this week on whether it should be listed.

This has got me thinking about my own home office shed and whether I should start to have a tidy up around here?

Okay, don’t gasp just yet, hear me out. There are some personal little things that effect us home business owner's lives. Those things that really dive deep and touch the heart.

I’m a normal home business entrepreneur and like most other business woman I'm not into anything weird, but on the third day of our honeymoon at the gorgeously private and secluded Olive Grove Farm in Italy a freckly lady walked into our lives.

Normally, I wouldn’t have agreed to share my special time alone with my new husband. Even though we’ve been living together for yonks, a wedding and then a honeymoon is a special time that you can only really be alone. Right?

The popularity of working from home has grown massively over the last five years, with four million of us now regularly working from home and many millions more doing so on an occasional basis.

One such remote worker began to blog and Tweet about his life working from his garden shed, and gained something of a cult following.

And so the idea of shedworking was born!

The online shedworking community is thriving; there’s even a “Shed of the Year” competition and a National Shed Week which is now in its seventh year. Our very own iHubbub crew member Suzanne Daykin certainly knows all about this kind of home working base!

Through working at iHubbub I have noticed recently that more and more start-up home businesses are using their facebook business page as their home business website. I am not just talking as a way to interact with new customers or to build up their profile but taking orders and showcasing products.

If it works, it is a clever way to reduce your home business start-up costs but is it ok by facebook rules?
