There are hundreds, thousands or maybe even millions of mums and dads around the world who are part of a massive community of active parenting bloggers.

Their blogs may be about a wide range of topics from juggling the daily successes and trials and tribulations of raising kids to their challenges and successes of running a home based business.

So this got me thinking about my own mummy blogging scenario ...

Sometimes, when a freelancing deadline is looming yet I’m still staring at a blank computer screen because my three year old son is standing on the chair next to me telling me a long and drawn-out story about Thomas the Tank Engine for the fifteenth time that morning, I question the wisdom of my decision to be a home working mum.

Working from home has lots of advantages for your home business, the most obvious is that you don’t have to pay expensive fees for your premises and something you may take for granted … you have one of the smallest commutes possible.

My daily commute is 23 steps from my kitchen door, it was even smaller before my home office shed was built… then it was plonk myself down at any spare space I could find. With 2 small children at home the hardest part was finding the spare space! And when I did find it, keeping my work stuff away from small helping hands was my next challenge to be organised.

In case you haven’t come across Pinterest it is a social media site where you can share images you love and find inspiration from what others have added. It is also a good way to tell more people about what you do and have fun interacting with your fans.

Plus it can play a big part in your home business digital marketing strategy.

If you've been there and done that, you'll know first hand that running a stand at a trade show or exhibition is pretty hard graft. Never mind the exhaustion that comes as part and parcel of this one successful way of marketing your business.

Once you've done your digital marketing plans and laid out your publicity campaigns and tackled all those other mind-boggling tasks for starting up and running a successful business, you may start to begin to understand why exhibiting can be useful to getting new client leads.

Like many working from home mums Rachel Bradbury's decision to leave her job in the City and start up a business in her home office came about after the birth of her first child in the summer of 2010.

Rachel explains how she went about starting up her own home based business ...

After much research and chats with friends and family my second child Custard & Crumble, an online boutique selling luxury nursery furniture and accessories, was born in February 2012.

My main drive (as a work from home mum) for setting up my own home business was the freedom it would give me to still spend time with my son, taking him to swimming and football classes, whilst also having something for myself to be proud of and of course still earning money.

Well, the summer holidays have arrived in my work from home household and so far they are going rather well ... I know it’s only been a few days!

Ask me again in 6 weeks!

We have filled our days with visits to family while I have been working from home for iHubbub.

However, a certain amount of normality has arrived this week with me cramming work in at home as well as spending fun time with my children. There are days when they will be at friends or at summer clubs, but that's not every day. And don't you just know that the days that I have planned not to work from home there will be a crisis that I will have to deal with.

Work emergencies when you're a work from home mum are fairly easy to deal with as you have everything you need to hand and your kids will be able to entertain themselves while you sort out a few bits.

When you start up your new and exciting business idea you'll be champing at the bit to get a productive work space in your home office.

Of course, you'll need to find every which way to minimize distractions and organise your work space to find the best way to make you more productive.

Niki Schafer offers all of iHubbub's home business owners, freelancing consultants and home workers a chance to create the perfect work space to ensure they spend their day working from home in total productive mode.

As a start up business, you'll need to decide if you're going to create your own professional business cards or spend money to get some designed and printed or even customised. What's the big deal with business cards anyway?

You may not realize it but your facility with language is a large determinant of your business success.  Those that possess the greatest facility with language write better blog posts, are better sales people and can even get paid for speaking.

If you have not always felt that your language skills were in the top 10%, there is some work you can do:

  • Expand your vocabulary.  You can find many books that help you learn 10 new words each week.
  • Do crossword puzzles
  • Join a local Toastmasters group to master your speaking skills
  • Take a writing course or copy writing course (many exist as home study courses)
  • Read a book a week

Interestingly, the big differentiator between humans and other animals is the use of language.

And the mastery of language is also the big differentiator of the most successful people in society.
